Mavericks 98, Grizzlies 83

Leading up to that first game, it had been a little bit of a circus. Now that we can concentrate on the game of basketball, that's what I have to do."

Josh Howard added 20 points. Nowitzki missed only one of his nine shots in the game, while shooting 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. Kidd's 15 assists was a season high for a Dallas player. The Mavericks had a season-high 32 in the game.

"We still had 21 turnovers, but 32 assists, that's pretty good for us," Dallas coach Avery Johnson said. "We'll take that."

Rudy Gay led Memphis with 18 points, while Hakim Warrick had 15 points and nine rebounds. Kyle Lowry finished with 12 points, Mike Conley added 11 and Javaris Crittenton had 10 points.

Dallas had lost four straight road games, but a stop in Memphis can cure most road woes.

Seilala Mapusua plays his first match since December. After five months out, Dan Scarbrough has recovered from knee surgery for Saracens, while Cobus Visagie, Hugh Vyvyan, Ben Skirving, David Seymour and Glen Jackson return. Tomorrow

Bristol v Bath, 3pm

Mark Regan, dubbed "The Clown" by Marc Lièvremont, the France coach, has to be content with a place on the Bristol bench for the big derby at Ashton Gate.

No jail for Plymouth man who torched his house

Butler, just before Christmas of 2006, argued with his wife kicking and pushing her before and ordering her and their five children out of the house.

Butler then torched the house, lighting several mattresses on fire and refused to come out while taunting firefighters from a window in the 122 Drew Road home.

He threw Christmas presents at firefighters and pushed ladders away from the home.

He was eventually overcome with smoke and firefighters were able to crawl through a second story window, locate him, and carry him, unconscious, down the ladder to a waiting ambulance.

Lt. Greg Kane and Firefighter Michael Morrill won awards for bravery following the harrowing incident.

Josee Butler and the couple's children initially went to Florida to stay with relatives, but have since returned.

McCain's endangered pander.

Endangered Pander? McCain supports legalization of illegal immigrants, loses 5 points over the month among Hispanic Republicans in California, according to SurveyUSA. Fred Thompson blasts the legalization bill from the right and his support among Hispanics quintuples, putting him ahead of McCain (and Giuliani) among Hispanics. ... P.S.: These are Hispanic Republicans, of course. But they are not insignificant, making up 17% of "likely Republican Primary voters" in Survey USA's model. ... P.P.S.: McCain's loss (and Thompson's gain) was actually greater among Hispanics than among GOP voters generally. ... P.P.P.S.: You don't even want to see what happened among black Republicans. ... 8:52 P.M.

A Poll Number WaPo Omitted: In that recent ABC-Wash Post poll, mentioned by Jonathan Weisman in this morning's Kyl-side--spinner, only 29 percent approved President Bush's handling of the immigration issue, a "career low." ...

Police arrest two men in baseball bat, gun scuffle

Officers responding to reports of men running around the complex waving baseball bats about 3:30 a.m. received another call before they reached the complex in the 1200 block of Cleveland Street. They were notified that callers were saying the men had shotguns.

A victim who said the men were driving around the parking lot in a car with their headlights turned off flagged down the officers.

Officers found the car and found bats and a BB gun that resembled a shotgun inside, according to the police report. They also found shotgun shells and a box for a shotgun, but they did not find the shotgun.

Witnesses said there was a party at an apartment and several people were told to leave because they were causing a disturbance. Some of those people returned several times.

Screw caps call for some arm twisting

Any recipient suspecting you to be a cheapskate could always Google the bottle and get set straight pretty quickly.

I'm glad everyone was happy in the end. But remember: All wine closures have their advantages and their faults, screw caps included. The big worry there is something called "reduction." An airtight seal can give wines a sulphury, barnyard smell. Screw caps remain a controversial choice for reds designed for long cellaring. So don't hold on to those bottles for too long.

Editorial: ‘Gifted’ funds lost in space

Therefore, parents must invest time and energy into learning how to create a great educational plan suited to your child's UNIQUE needs. Parents do not have to accept an ep duplicate of your neighbor's. I want my children in the environment most likely to develop them to potential. I do not find it my child's job to tutor some other child during the school day or to do crossword puzzles daily. Iwant my child challenged and excited to learn, not coddled and unexposed to failure. Gifted children deserve to learn something new every day as does any child. Does that happenfor gifted children when they are poorly served?Margaret Delacy, my favorite advocate, asked a question, "Why are we teaching these kids the ABCswhen they already know how to read?" The best way to make sure yur child is not wasting time in school is that set of papers called an educational plan.
