Hip-Hop Rumors: We Don't Need No Rumors Today!

I would like to quickly clarify what happened at the Kanye West show in California. Actually, it was a Common show that Kanye popped up on. Last week I said that Kanye dissed the Grammys. Well, it wasn't at the Anaheim show like I said. This apparently occurred at the Hollywood show at the House of Blues. I wasn't there so I didn't hear it or anything. Also, I heard that in a third verse freestyle, Kanye said “I beat 50."
Thanks a lot, Peter!! (See the pics down below)

EMINEM RUMORS FALSE

There was another crappy Eminem rumor coming out that the Detroit rapper was going to be wrestling in the WWE. Shame on you if you believed that one. It was refuted faster than any other rumor in the history of man.

Sports Columnists

We could argue for days over which of our winter sports franchises is better, but that would miss the depressing point. Since neither is any good, isn't it more appropriate to ponder, category by category, which is worse?

TEAM The Hawks have a better squad than their record indicates. (They're 18-22, having lost five of six.) Even after losing five in a row, the Thrashers have a better record than statistics would warrant. (The team that has yielded more goals than any other is 23-25-4, due mostly to its success in overtime and shootouts.)

You watch the Hawks and come away believing they should be better. You watch the Thrashers and wonder how they're as competitive as they are.

WHO'S WORSE?: The Thrashers, because they wouldn't be in the playoffs if the postseason started today, while the Hawks, not exactly on merit, would.

Beltway ramp to Eden

Fifty years ago, when construction of the Baltimore Beltway tore through woods and rural villages like scissors through a knitted scarf, disjointed neighborhoods and dead-end streets were often left in its wake.

Eden Terrace, off the Catonsville exit ramp, is one such place. The name Eden still appropriately describes the area that dates to the early 1900s. Towering oak trees grow just feet from the Beltway's concrete barrier walls while winding roads snake through wooded properties with grand old houses.

Attorney Dick Piet and his artist wife Natalie McIntyre desired woods and privacy but with easy access to downtown Baltimore and Washington. They happened upon a granite cottage for sale there. Built in 1945, its 2-foot-thick stone walls are capped by a slate roof.

Assam tea industry hails budget, opposition unimpressed

GUWAHATI: The mega tea industry in Assam Friday expressed satisfaction over the allocations in the union budget for tea research and boosting production.

"We are happy that the central government has decided to lay stress on research and development in the tea sector and also earmarked funds for revamping tea bushes and improve overall productivity," Debeswar Bora of the Assam Tea Planters' Association (ATPA) said.

The 2008-09 budget has allocated Rs.400 million ($10 million) for Special Purpose Tea Fund and Rs.200 million ($5 million) for tea research.

Assam contributes over 50 percent of India's total tea production of 900 million kg a year. The state has over 800 tea plantations.

The state Congress unit hailed the budget, calling it "pro-people".

Expo Keynote - Live Update

Apple delivered more than 5 million copies in the first three months. The most successful release of Mac OS X ever. Almost 20 percent of the installed base is upgraded to Leopard (a nifty wood theme on Keynote pie chart). We get quotes from Walt Mossberg, David Pogue, Ed Baig, (Bet the fourth one is Steven Levy!). Ooh, a surprise: it's actually Ed Mendelson from PC Magazine (that gets a laugh).

9:17 PT: DM - Leopard's been well received by developers. Microsoft is now shipping Office 2008. It's the last big app to go native on Intel. Whoops, first Jobs glitch: he said “Tiger" when he meant “Leopard."

9:18 PT: DM - Jobs talks about Time Machine: You wish you didn't need that wire for connecting your Time Machine drive. And today we've got one— Time Capsule, a backup appliance.

Home on Stockton Lake early award for energy efficiency

Stitt Energy Systems Inc. of Rogers, Ark., has received two EnergyValue Housing Awards (EVHA) for its 2008 entry, a passive solar house near Stockton Lake, president W. Orlo Stitt announced in a news release.

He said the award-winning home fulfills a vision of the home owners, Cheryl Marcum and Mitch Ross, graduates of Missouri State University.

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center selected 17 finalists from 500 applications from across the nation. Entries competed in categories: affordable, custom, production, and multifamily markets for hot, moderate and cold climate regions.

From the finalists, the Gold and Silver designations were chosen by an elite panel of judges. The awards were presented at the International Builders Show in Orlando, Fla., on Feb.

Preschool to Grade 4

This title was originally published in 1950, and Yaccarino's new illustrations retain the look of that era. The colors are uniform and flat throughout, and Ollie wears a navy suit with short pants and a bow tie. The illustrator plays with size and perspective; the boy's horn is sometimes larger than buildings. The book is mildly amusing but not an essential purchase.—Ieva Bates, Ann Arbor District Library, MI
