NY man guilty in death of white teen
RIVERHEAD, N.Y.—A black man who invoked images of lynch mobs in explaining why he killed a white teenager was convicted of second-degree manslaughter when a jury rejected defense lawyers' arguments that his actions were justified. Jurors reached a verdict Saturday after four days of deliberations and an emotional three-week trial that flared around questions of race and recklessness. The defendant, John White, raised the nation's history of racist violence in describing why he brandished a gun at a group of angry white teenagers who came to his house on Aug. 9, 2006. White ultimately shot 17-year-old Daniel Cicciaro in what he said was an accident, but a prosecutor said was the result of poor judgment. Saying White planned to appeal, defense attorney Fred Brewington called the verdict "disappointing for African-Americans" in the area.

Human-trafficking ring hit, agents say
Six people were arrested this week in a human-smuggling operation based in Los Angeles that involved thousands of illegal immigrants held in horrid conditions. Agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement culminated a three-year investigation that began when police found about 140 illegal immigrants locked inside two "drop houses" in South Los Angeles. "We believe this ring was probably bringing 100 aliens a week into the L.A. area," ICE spokeswoman Virginia Kice said. "You're looking at a lot of people - and a lot of money." Agents said the three ringleaders are all named Francisco and worked only in the U.S., picking up immigrants they called "pollos" - Spanish for chickens - who had crossed the border into Arizona. The "pollo books" were seized in raids on Wednesday and show the ring charged clients $1,200 to $3,700 each for transportation to cities across the U.S., according to an affidavit filed in federal court.
Hearts, FAR Rabat in shock exits
FAR Rabat also suffered a shock elimination from the tournament at the hands of little-known Sporting Praia of Cape Verde on Saturday. The 1985 champions were eliminated 5-4 on penalties after the tie finished 3-3 on aggregate in Praia. Sporting Praia won the second-leg game 3-0 thanks to a brace by Jwaw Tegana, overturning the first leg deficit. The Cape Verdians shocked the visitors on 11 minutes through Tegana, who got the better of FAR Rabat's defenders before opening the scoring. They doubled their lead on the half hour mark through Lovandeur Mandouza before Tegana struck again with only five minutes remaining. Elsewhere on Saturday, South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns thrashed visiting Miembeni of Zanzibar 4-0 in their second leg game. That result means that Sundowns win the tie 5-0 on aggregate.
Fred Friction and Frederick's Music Lounge Reunion Show
Frederick's Music Lounge lives on. Well, sort of. The beloved St. Louis music club closed two years ago, but its spirit survives with the second annual Fred Friction and Frederick's Music Lounge Reunion Show. It's scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Off Broadway with performances by the Saps, Earl, the Dirty 30s and Jonathan Baer. Tony Boersma, a former Frederick's "drunken regular" eventually promoted to "door guy," is behind the reunion show. "It was always a place where I could see music five nights a week," he says. "And just about everyone I met in St. Louis, I met there." .
