G. Chambers Williams III: Lexus hybrid saves fuel and money

Buying an expensive gasoline-electric hybrid SUV might not make a lot of sense if saving money on gasoline is the only motivation.

Someone who can pay the $41,000-plus price of the Lexus RX 400h, our test vehicle, probably isn't as worried about gas prices as those driving, say, Honda Civics.

But the RX 400h's fuel economy — 27 miles per gallon in the city and 24 on the highway — is a nice plus, especially considering that some of the large, truck-based SUVs do well to get 15 mpg on the highway.

Toyota's reason for creating the RX 400h wasn't as much about saving money at the gas pumps as creating an SUV that might be a bit more environmentally responsible, using less gas and putting out lower levels of harmful emissions. The vehicle produces 90 percent less smog-forming tailpipe emissions than similar conventionally powered vehicles, Lexus says.

Kevin Posival: Super Bowl caps season of letdowns

We've seen the Patriots win Super Bowls and we've seen Tom Brady win Super Bowl MVP's. We've never seen a 19-0 team and we never imagined Eli Manning in the Super Bowl, much less winning one.

In the end, I'll be disappointed that the Patriots didn't make history or that the Giants didn't prove to be giant-killers. It is a season of disappointment, after all.

We've seen baseball's 'holy grail' branded with an asterisk. We've seen Marion Jones' five Olympic medals and Floyd Landis' Tour de France yellow jersey stripped far quicker than they were 'earned.' A Washington senator questions Roger Clemens' seven Cy Young Awards and Michael Vick shows up three weeks early for a 23-month sentence hoping to get leniency for his association with a dogfighting ring.

As sports fans, we need a 19-0 NFL season like a leg-less man needs a pair of Vince Young's new Reebok football cleats and we need the giant underdogs to win like another David Carr-like franchise quarterback.

Fight blight on Airways

Has the mayor lost his mind (Feb. 20 article, "Tax double whammy looms in '09 / Memphis, Shelby County sound early alarm of property hike"). Property taxpayers aren't facing a "double whammy"; they're facing a "triple whammy."

Mayor Willie Herenton's depressing prediction that an increase in the property tax rate next year is "almost inescapable" disregards the fact that 2009 is also a reassessment year for Shelby County. Along with the higher property taxes that this mayor is proposing comes the additional burden that property taxpayers will face from an artificial increase in values of their property once again, increasing the tax liability even more.

With property tax you pay more when your home's assessed value increases, regardless of changes to your income or whether you ever realize increased gain when you sell your home.

QPR 3-0 Stoke

QPR prevented Stoke from going back to the top of the Championship table with a convincing victory at Loftus Road.

Mikele Leigertwood put the hosts ahead with a stunning 25-yard drive and then struck from 12 yards from Rowan Vine's headed knock-down to double the lead.

Stoke had captain Andy Griffin harshly dismissed following a challenge for the ball with Hogan Ephraim before Akos Buzsaky's low shot made it 3-0.

The Potters hit the woodwork twice and worked hard but without reward.

QPR coach Luigi De Canio:"We have beaten the top teams this season.

"This shows we need to acquire the mentality when playing teams at the bottom of the table that we show against teams at the top.

"Consistency is important, because our position in the table is defined by our performances week in, week out."

Stoke manager Tony Pulis on Griffin's dismissal:"I don't think it's a sending off.

Rumsfeld gets a standing ovation after he spoke to U.S. Army soldiers during a town meeting Wednesday July 27, 2005 at the Balad airbase in Central Iraq. Rumsfeld, who arrived unannounced in Baghdad Wednesday, said he would urge the Iraqis not to miss the deadline for completing the draft of a constitution to be submitted for a national vote in October.

Got Vino? Try the Village's Gottino!

Semi-locavores will thrill to the mellow and mouth-meltingly soft Grayson cheese, made at Meadow Creek Dairy in Galax, Virginia. Drenched in honey, Gottino's two-year-old parmigiano reggiano is just as desirable, but the pale and runny gorgonzola lacks punch—pick the robiola instead. Also on the passive side, find a chunky homemade pork pâté wrapped in cawl fat, served with a lonely cornichon and a dab of fig jam. Man, is it good!

The active side features crostini, composed salads, meaty mini-entrées, and pickled fish. On this side, the food is mainly Florentine in its outlook, even when chef Jody Williams is at her most creative. In that blessed city and in the Chianti regions to the southwest, peasant cooks are great admirers of fish, though the mountains that separate them from the sea historically prevent them from getting it fresh, making pickled seafood the order of the day.
