61% believe country is in grips of recession, poll finds

Wall Street is unsettled and as a result, people's nest eggs are not what they once were.

In fact, that was the top economic worry in the AP-Ipsos poll. Fifty-nine percent said they were worried "a lot" or "some" about seeing the value of stocks and retirement investments drop.

"I really dread opening my (financial) statements," Sims said.

By one rough rule of thumb, a recession occurs when there are two consecutive quarters — six straight months — when the economy shrinks. That did not happen in the last recession, though. The economy contracted in the first quarter of 2001, turned positive in the second quarter, shrank in the third quarter and turned up again in the final quarter of that year.

The National Bureau of Economic Research, the recognized arbiters for dating recessions, uses a more complicated formula.

Stylish 1919 townhouse

Just like scoping out the perfect shot, professional photographers Joseph and Anne Sachs allowed themselves time to find exactly what they wanted in a home. Having rented for many years in Baltimore's Roland Park neighborhood, they were seeking something with similar ambience.

"We wanted something with character," said Anne Sachs, co-owner, along with her husband, of Artful Weddings by Sachs Photography. "A classic-style house, with hardwood floors, high ceilings and a fireplace."

What they eventually found was a three-story red brick Georgian-style townhouse on Newland Road in the southeast corner of the city's Guilford neighborhood. Built in 1919, the home features slate roofing, white wood trim, a screened front patio porch and a third floor with dormers.

January 2008

The Wall Street Journal notes that conservative talk-show host and author Michael Graham blogged after the Florida Republican primary, ""So it is over. Finished. In November, we'll be sending out our most liberal, least trustworthy candidate."

But the Journal says McCain is a lot more conservative than some give him credit for being. And as Sen. Lindsey Graham, a longtime friend and supporter of McCain notes, ""There's a level of practicality among Republicans I haven't seen in a long time, a focus on winning I haven't seen in a long time."

And as the paper notes "he is the candidate many Democrats least want to face, the one who would best remake his party's battered image and draw independent voters needed to win in November" despite his problems with conservatives in his own party.

Pair of plows taken from trucks at Tradeport

Another auto parts crime was reported Feb. 23, when an employee from Portsmouth Ford on the Spaulding Turnpike told police that two tailgates were stolen from pickup trucks parked on the lot. News reports indicate the theft of truck tailgates is widespread and the crimes are occasionally solved when the items are listed as for sale.

On Jan. 10, local officers were dispatched to Clean Harbors on Gosling Rd., where a report was taken about the theft of a catalytic converter, again from a Ford pickup truck. The converters, also known as cats, are valued at approximately $70 each, because they are coated in a wash of valuable metals, including platinum and rhodium.

The shaves and the shave-nots

I threw out a call for guys with facial hair to come to an event at a Boulder restaurant," he says. "I thought we would get like 15 people. We got more than 100."

The guys hung out and talked about their beards, and competed in a beard contest. .
