For the individual who died and for all friends and family of anyone who has died involving snowmobiles, they have my sincerest sympathies. But, we can't make laws limiting the entertainment and livelihood of millions to save the lives of a few poeple making bad choices. In addition, think of the costs to enforce all these laws to make sure no on ever dies on a snowmobile (or other recreational activity - down hill skiing!!!!!). Where do we station police and at what sacrifie (less police elsewhere or more taxes) to prevent these isolated incidents? This is a basic principle for all activities where there are some risks. If we had a law prohibiting two passengers on a single passenger sled, would that solve our problem? Would handcuffing the snwomobile manufacturers with "slower" sleds help? What is the politically correct, gov't limited, top speed of a new snowmobile to ride double while drunk? At what blood alchohol level? Why not limit speed so even the inexperienced sledder won't get hurt? Better yet, we should require the machines performance to be throttled back as the machine gets older because something may wear out.
'Dangerous Not to Be Aware How It Sounds on Television'
You know, it's always, it's always dangerous in politics to talk to the crowd, and not be aware how it looks or sounds on television. Ouch. But then again, show me the person who after viewing the Hillary clip says "yeah, that's the ticket. I've been on the fence but now I'm voting for her." .
Master Gardeners volunteer green thumbs to beautify the Heyward House
The Lowcountry Master Gardener Association is comprised of about 150 volunteers who work on horticulture and ecology projects in Beaufort and Jasper counties. Members must complete at least 40 hours of training in horticulture courses -- including basic botany, fruit gardening and landscape design -- to earn their title, according to the group's Web site. And in addition to the dozen hours of volunteer service they must offer annually after certification, Master Gardeners also must complete six additional hours of continuing education each year. A handful of certified members work on the grounds of the Heyward House one Thursday each month. On Jan. 31, seven gardener volunteers -- all Bluffton residents -- laid pine straw over parts of the landscaping to prevent weeds from popping up and to contain moisture in the ground.
Councilman MikeK Recalls Knievel Action Figure
Top: Young MikeK playing with Evel Knievel action figure; bottom: MikeK receives inspiration from his childhood friends before leaving for a Coeur d'Alene City Council meeting. I had a classic Evel Knievel motorcycle riding action figure when I was a kid. The stunts my brothers and I would stage for that motorcycle toy were legendary (riding out a second story window, chasing the dog around the house without getting chewed to ribbons, you name it). RIP Evel. I wonder what happened to Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man who played the role of Evel's arch-nemesis in the boyhood action figure wars?/Councilman MikeK. Question: What was your favorite action figure/doll when you were little? .
