| Local man under arrest in double homicide on Riley Drive
I saw Calvin every day. He would walk past my house when he worked at the furniture store on West Market Street," said friend Nicole Francis. Calvin Walls worked at Warehouse Furniture in Bloomington, Kimmerling said in a statement.“He was a nice guy, kind of quiet and easy going," Francis said.Francis said she was shocked to learn Wednesday that Calvin Walls was one of the shooting victims.“He came from a big family, I know that. You never heard anything negative about them," said Francis.Court records show Brown was sentenced in December 2002 to 180 days in jail, 30 months of probation and 50 hours of community service work on a charge of unlawful use of a weapon. Vandals trash Island Recreation Center, leave satanic graffiti behind
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office has stepped up patrols around the recreation center in recent months in response to the surge in vandalism, but stopping graffiti is an ongoing battle, said Capt. Toby McSwain, head of the southern enforcement division. "The thing is, the graffiti has been all over the island," he said. "It's been something we've been constantly chasing." Deputies have arrested some juveniles for graffiti in the past, but the problem persists, McSwain said. Graffiti was also reported this week on the Cross Island Parkway overpass. The Sheriff's Office suspects most of the perpetrators are young people, and that the spray-painted gang symbols likely were from imitators instead of signs of actual gang activity, he said. "It's always an area we try to be proactive in," McSwain said.
Lewisville may end garage conversions, citing parking problems
Lewisville city officials may close the door on residents wanting to convert their garages into living spaces. The popularity of conversions in the last 15 years has gradually transformed some residential streets into parking lots – an eyesore for city officials and an obstacle course for emergency vehicles. Some residents park vehicles in front lawns when streets fill up. Lewisville's City Council is scheduled to vote Monday on a proposal requiring residents build a replacement garage or carport before converting a parking structure into a living space. That would effectively ban most conversions in older neighborhoods, where lot sizes are too small to build another garage. Farmers Branch and Richardson have similar ordinances. But most of the other older suburbs with similar street-parking issues require only that homeowners obtain building permits for conversions.
Ballard hosts Tent City
Residents whose homes line the church parking lot say they were not given any choice. They are no strangers to vagrants and others relieving themselves by nearby trash containers, sleeping under trees and performing sex acts outside their windows. It's difficult to convince property owners that Tent Cities' participants will not trigger similar 911 calls, Parks said. But participants have worked hard to distinguish themselves, and their behavior, church officials and advocates for the homeless say. They attend community meetings, explaining their screening for sex predators, and strict rules against unruly or disruptive behavior, panhandling, drinking and drugs. "I knew very little about Tent City before they came to talk to us," said resident Karen Wilson, a member of the church who lives in View Ridge.
Review: 'Boleyn Girl' doesn't know what it is
If he wants her (and she makes sure that he does) he's going to have to marry her. Watch the stars talk about the film » Although it's being sold as a classy bodice-ripper, the movie is less sexed up than Showtime's "The Tudors" and less souped up than last year's "Elizabeth: The Golden Years." It could be regarded as an unofficial prequel to that movie, as Anne Boleyn was Elizabeth's mother. Still, sex is central to the tragedy, and so is class. Gregory and screenwriter Peter Morgan, fresh from his courtly duties on "The Queen," take aim at a callous patriarchal society where arranged marriages are the ticket to prosperity and political advancement. The girls' father, Thomas Boleyn (Mark Rylance), and his brother-in-law, the Duke of Norfolk (David Morrissey), conspire to dangle them before Henry in the hope that one will take his fancy.
