Leeds weather Storm to claim world crown

A brief flurry of fisticuffs broke up a game of attrition where iron defence ruled, a handful of players from both sides racking up 30-plus tackles and another handful leaving the pitch injured.

Leeds forward Carl Ablett then had a try ruled out after a slight knock-on chasing a Burrow chip over a flat Storm defence.

With 15 minutes to play, Sinfield nailed a 30-metre field goal to stretch Leeds' lead to seven.

Melbourne, who beat St Helens in the 2000 Challenge, had a late effort by Will Chambers disallowed after the winger stepped into touch when scoring to ensure there would be no repeat of their previous win.

Leeds: 11 (S Donald try; K Sinfield 3 conversions, field goal)

Melbourne: 4 (R Hoffman try)

Fielder tells jury wife died accidentally

MARTINSBURG — The former lawyer charged with first-degree murder in the death of his ex-wife last year, took the witness stand Tuesday in Berkeley County Circuit Court on the fourth day of his trial. Stephen R. Fielder, 59, said he divorced his ex-wife, Debra Ann Fielder, sometime in 2001 and 2002, but in early 2006 she resurfaced, arriving at his front door step with no place to go. “I hated to see her suffering, and wanted see her get back on her feet," Fielder said. The badly decomposed and dismembered body of Debra Fielder was found stuffed into suitcases in Back Creek in August 2006. The jury of eight men and four women later entered deliberations after hearing Stephen Fielder's testimony and closing arguments. They deliberated for a little more than an hour before deciding to retire for the day.

China dominates at team table tennis tournament in warm-up for ...

Pressure has been mounting on China as the Olympics approach. Table tennis is its national sport, and anything less than gold in the Chinese capital will be simply unacceptable.

"We gained a lot of valuable experience for the Olympics playing at this tournament in Guangzhou," men's coach Liu Guoliang told China Central Television.

The team championships brought nearly all the world's top players to southern China, and some of the matchups are likely to be repeated at the Olympics in August.

Despite China's overall dominance, the tournament revealed a few weaknesses in its game. Inexperience was a major factor as world No. 3 Guo Yue was unable to find her rhythm and lost 3-0 to Singapore's Li Jiawei in the women's final Saturday.

The 19-year-old Guo became increasingly frustrated as eighth-ranked Li, a former Chinese player, foiled her normally aggressive game.

Tanker award caps tumultuous period

After the Air Force responded to McCain's complaint and announced it would solicit competing bids, Druyun admitted sharing with Boeing proprietary pricing information that had been furnished to the Pentagon by rival Airbus.

"It was jaw-dropping," said Danielle Brian, executive director of the Project on Government Oversight, a nonpartisan watchdog group. "She was admitting to what in the worst of all worlds we thought might be happening."

Later investigations concluded that part of the problem rested in the fact that Druyun had functioned during the previous tanker competition in a bureaucratic vacuum, with little oversight from superiors or little transparency to outsiders.

Fast-forward to 2008, and the Air Force now has congressional approval to buy a new fleet of aerial tankers.

Oil prices hold steady near $100

Oil investors can interpret such news in one of two ways: Selling on concerns that the economy, and thus demand for oil, is cooling; or buying on the prospect that interest rates will fall, weakening the dollar and feeding new buying of oil futures. On Wednesday, they definitively chose the latter view. Watch investors speculate on OPEC cutting output »

"The Fed was ... the catalyst to get us going here," said Phil Flynn, an analyst at Alaron Trading Corp. in Chicago.
