Fire Engulfs Centennial Home, Injures Owner
CENTENNIAL, Colo. -- Fire engulfed a home on South Krameria Way near County Line Road just before noon Thanksgiving day, injuring a man inside. "I was cooking in the kitchen when my phone rang," said neighbor Liz Landert. "It was my daughter. She said, 'Are you OK? Is your house on fire?' I said, 'No.' She said, 'Something is on fire by your house. It's got to be by your house.'" Landert went outside and saw the flames next door. .
When the Teacher Becomes the Student
With four months remaining until I head back to the US and still light-years away from the “fluency" I'd once imagined I'd be able to achieve, I decided to look into the private Mandarin schools in the Wudaokou area, not far from where I teach. My first stop was a school run by an American from Chicago. He didn't speak much Chinese but had a very firm handshake and made lots of eye contact-- things I noticed right away only because they are not the norm in China. Several days after I visited, he called to offer a 10% discount on the class we'd talked about. I appreciated the US-style of professionalism but not the US prices, which I couldn't afford on my local salary. The next school I visited offered me a free class. Their method was distinctive; the teacher presented me with a situation and I was asked to invent a story about it.
Multinationals: Are They Good for America?
Flush with cash from booming overseas sales, the glass giant is amping up its product development efforts at home. "It's important for the functioning of our innovation machine that we be in one location," says Corning Inc. President Peter F. Volanakis. That's good news for the residents of Steuben County, where Corning is the largest employer. Since 2005 they have watched their unemployment rate drop faster than thatof neighboring counties, in part because of Corning's commitment to the area and its ability to sell around the world. Americans are going to need quite a few more Cornings—global companies willing to invest in the U.S.—to ease the pain of the economic slowdown. The big multinationals are the go-to guys right now: They've got plenty of cash and soaring profits from overseas operations.
Your Place: Garage door balky? Some WD-40 won't hurt
Question: When the temperature is very cold, my garage door opens about a foot and then stops. If I disconnect the automatic opener, I can open the door manually without a problem. If I reconnect the opener, the door opens normally. Do you have any ideas about the cause of the problem and any possible solutions? Answer: The cold is probably to blame. When this happened a few years ago with my garage door, I lubricated the drive in the middle - where the emergency release is attached - and it fixed the problem. I think the original lubricant on the screw drive either wore off or got thicker because of the colder temperatures. I sprayed WD-40 on the screw drive, and the door opened just fine. Your problem may not be exactly like mine, but my solution is worth a try. Q: Within six months of moving into my home, I was diagnosed with asthma and eventually developed a sinus infection that recurred for 10 months.
Bamberg native David Cooler paving way to fame with music true to his ...
At that time, he was virtually a one-man band, providing all of his own back-up music."However, last year, when David performed at Showcase Orangeburg, I learned what a fine musician he really is. And just as important, I realized what a really nice person he is. He was so accommodating as a member of the team that comprised Showcase Orangeburg and was willing to do whatever was necessary to ensure the success of the program. He was respectful of the other entertainers, showing appreciation and support for their talent. And what's great about David Cooler is that he's just having so much fun!"Cooler's songs appeal to people of all ages who enjoy soulful, Southern rock music with a country rhythm-and-blues style. Cooler said his music is a form of self-expression and communication based on true-life experiences."The music and lyrics flow from within," he said.
